How to Insulate a Garage Door

An insulated garage door helps trap heat inside your garage during the winter months and serves as a barrier between it and outside noises. Garage insulation can also improve the visual appeal of your garage and increase energy efficiency. Follow our step-by-step guide to insulate your garage door without spending a lot of money.
Materials

The materials you will require will include:
● Insulation material
● Construction or foam adhesives
● Tape measure
● Sharp knife
● Step ladder
● Powerful suction cup
● Foam adhesive
● Aluminum foil

Foam board insulation is the most common material for garage insulation, but there are several other materials you may choose from. We suggest selecting insulation appropriate for your climate. You can find a selection of insulation material options at your local hardware or home improvement store.

This tutorial will use rigid foam insulation. Generally, foam board and reflective insulation materials are ideal for insulating flat garage doors that have no panels.

Measuring Your Garage Door Panels

Use a tape measure to measure the size of your garage door’s panels. If you have a flat garage door, measure instead the size of the entire garage door. This will tell you what size you will need to cut your insulation liner for it to fit into the walls.

Cut The Foam Board and Fit them on the Garage Door Panels

Cut the rigid foam insulation using the measurements you took previously and fit them onto the door panels using your hands. If needed, use a suction cup to help apply extra pressure. The insulation liner should fit snug inside the panels. If there is a small gap between the edges and your insulation material, use foam adhesive to ensure a snug and secure fit. If you still find gaps between your slabs of insulation, use aluminum foil to reinforce the thermal barrier and secure the rigid foam in place.
If you find any spaces or breaks between pieces, seal them with aluminum foil to reinforce the thermal barrier as well as to secure the insulation material in place. For flat garage doors, align the insulation material on the walls using foam adhesive.

Use Construction/Foam Adhesive

When insulating your garage doors, ensure that you only use foam adhesive that is designed for such purposes. After fitting the insulation material in place, press the wall firmly in smooth strokes in order to create a stronger bond between the garage door and the insulation material.
